Dominican Republic

We stayed at Barceló Bávaro Beach in Punta Cana. I’ll start by saying that this was our first stay at an all-inclusive resort. We tend to book our stays with Airbnb/VRBO, as we’ve found them to be a less expensive alternative to hotels as well as a little more comprehensive in terms of options. 

On the plus side, the resort is gorgeous; it highlights Bavaro beach, which tends to make the top beach lists periodically. One of us certainly benefitted from the bottomless drink options, and we had a great time relaxing by the pool and on the beach. The only thing we found underwhelming was the food – for the most part it was bland and poorly prepared, which is surprising for a upscale resort. We did find some of the food to be very good, but it was at restaurants not included in the “all-inclusive food” part of our stay, meaning you gotta pay extra.  But in general, the experience was awesome, and having an Adults-Only resort option was perfect for us.  

Things to Do & See

The resort was right next door to Playa Bibijagua, a shopping area where you can find everything you could want or need in the way of souvenirs and mementos (you know, like cigars and rum). Try the mamajuana, a blend of tree bark, herbs and spices soaked in rum and honey; everyone who makes it has a slightly different recipe. It’s credited to the shamans of the native Taino People, and it’s referred to as “The Baby Maker”. It packs a punch, even in small amounts, so tread carefully. 

Punta Cana Snorkel Tour

Located in the plaza, you’ll find the offices for Hispaniola Aquatic Adventures. If you’re looking for a Caribbean excursion, this is one you shouldn’t miss. We had a blast with this company! The boats are well-maintained and the crew is awesome.  The tour made two stops for snorkeling, as well as a stop on a beach to visit the Coco-man, who’s hand-carved coconuts are filled with rum, sugar and juices. Tons of fun, and we were totally impressed with the positivity and attention paid by the crew. Our favorite meal of the trip was actually served on that boat. 

Dune Buggy Tour

We would also recommend a tour with Xtreme-Buggy in Bavaro. While the day was a little cooler and rainy, it made for a great, muddy adventure. We drove up into the hills outside of town and were able to see what life is like for the Dominican people. It’s a departure from what you see at the resorts, and one of those experiences that broadens your outlook on other cultures.  

Eats 

Jellyfish Beach Restaurant 

We ate most of our meals at the resort, but ventured down the beach to Jellyfish on Valentine’s Day. We sat on the 2nd level overlooking the beach and the Caribbean. The food was good, the view was great, and the setting was perfect.
